HEY THERE

I do receive a lot of questions about my work, tattooing in general, the whole booking process and what to expect from an appointment with me.

To make things a bit easier on everybody, I have decided to collect and answer the most frequent ones here, and provide you with all the information you'll need prior to confirming your appointment.

If you feel like anything is left unclear. or can't seem find your specific question answered here, please don't hesitate to reach out.

A lot of questions will also be answered in depth by reading through my terms of service [AGB].
Click on the headline above or on the link in the footer below to view them.

  • HOW CAN I BOOK AN APPOINTMENT WITH YOU?
Just send me an email to sera.redwood@gmail.com or use the contact from on this page (click the BOOKING button to get directed to it). Make sure your inquiry includes the following information: • your idea (description/photos/references) • rough size in cm • placement (include a photo if you can, especially if there are other tattoos in that area that we'll need to incorporate or work around) • colour / black and grey / linework only • your budget if you have one • availability (when are you NOT available)
  • DO I HAVE TO PAY A DEPOSIT? WHY?
Yes. I usually take deposits via PayPal to confirm your booking. The deposit compensates me for all the work I'm doing before our appointment even begins: time for consulation, admin, drawing, etc. It also compensates part of my losses in case of short-notice cancelations / no-shows. The deposit is not refundable.
  • WHAT ARE YOUR RATES / WHAT IS YOUR PRICING POLICY?
The price depends highly on the size/placement/complexity of the piece. If you have sent me a booking request with the complete information as listed above I will always include an estimated price for your own planning and plotting in my response :)
  • WHAT HAPPENS IF I NEED TO CANCEL OR RESCHEDULE?
If you need to cancel your appointment for whatever reason, please make sure do so until 48hrs before the appointment, so that I have a chance to find someone else to fill in :) Any cancelations or reschedules on shorter notice than that will forfeit your deposit. We can always try to find a new date that better accommodates you, it just might be that you'll have to make a new deposit, as well.
  • CAN I COME IN FOR A CONSULTATION?
For time management reasons, I very rarely do in-person consultations. I do, however, put a lot of effort into my communication with you via email, to make sure that you can express all of your ideas (with references, etc) to me and have it all documented at the same time. Vice-versa, I can ensure that I'll have given all the information that you'll need to make a final decision about your booking in advance. I'll reply to all of your questions in detail and double-check whenever needed to make sure I fully understand the ideas and visions you have for your tattoo. Hoewever, I do happily schedule extra appointments for in-person consultations if it is a more complex piece, either because of it being a cover-up/scar cover-up/large concept piece/etc.
  • WHEN CAN I EXPECT AN ANSWER?
I always try to get back to any and all messages as soon as possible. I am often able to reply within 1-3 business days; but sometimes it can take up to 7 days for me to carve out the time and respond to all of you with the attention and care you deserve. Please be patient and don't re-send your emails; that'll only clog up my inbox and make it more difficult to keep things structured :) Thank you for understanding!
  • WHAT CAN I DO TO BEST PREPARE FOR MY APPOINTMENT?
❖ GET A GOOD NIGHT'S REST It's important to be well rested so that you can be alert and stay in tune with your body. ❖ HYDRATE Being properly hydrated makes your skin more resilient which will allow you to last longer and your skin to take the ink better. ❖ SHAVE Shave 24hrs before your appointment. However, if you tend to give yourself razor burn ot cuts, feel free to leave it to me prepare the area we're going to tattoo. ❖ SHOWER Not only is it nice to show up smelling good but showering beforehand will ensure that your skin is as clean as possible. ❖ MOISTURISE Moisturise for a couple of weeks prior to your appointment but NOT on the day of. ❖ EAT Make sure you eat a balanced meal before your session even if you're not hungry. This will help prevent you from getting light-headed and, worst case, pass out. It will also give your body the energy to last longer. ❖ DRESS FOR YOUR SESSION Make sure you dress comfortably and so that the spot we're going to tattoo is easily accessible. Layers are recommended as you are likely to get very hot and/or very cold. ❖ PACK A BAG The following items are recommended to bring to your appointment: water, snacks (containing sugar), headphones, proper payment (most spaces I work at are cash only), a jumper or zipper hoodie
  • WHAT METHODS OF PAYMENT DO YOU OFFER?
Deposits are paid exclusively via PayPal. The remainder is due to in cash only at the end of our session.
  • CAN I GET INKED WHILE PREGNANT OR BREASTFEEDING?
    No.
  • WHAT KIND OF STYLES DO YOU WORK IN?
I focus primarily on working in colourful neotraditional, but I also enjoy black and grey and/or linework only projects. If you are uncertain if your ideas and my style would be a good match - just ask :)
  • IS THERE ANYTHING YOU DON'T TATTOO?
Oh yeah. Actually, I have a list: • I don't tattoo any styles I am not specialised it. Like any type of photo realism or old school or complex geometry pieces. • I don't do micro/tiny tattoos because they don't heal well and won't last. • I don't do lettering in languages I can't proof-read and I don't do lettering when I have reason to believe you yourself don't fully understand what you're getting tattooed there, either. • In that same vein: I try to be culturally sensitive with my craft and try to refrain from any works that could be considered culturally appropriative, for example indigenous art, kanji, mandalas etc. without the relevant context. I am in no way perfect and always happy to broaden my horizon and be corrected if I get anything wrong. • In terms of placements, I do not tattoo eyeballs, faces, mucous membranes or genitalia. • I don't do permanent make-up (PMU).
  • WILL YOU TATTOO A PRE-MADE DESIGN/MY OWN SKETCH/A PICTURE I'VE FOUND ONLINE?
No. I do not copy other people's work.
  • CAN YOU COPY A SPECIFIC STYLE? I THINK IT WOULD BE A GREAT CHALLENGE FOR YOU!
No, thank you. I've spent years to develop my current style and I'm looking forward to refining it and developping it further throughout the, hopefully, many years ahead of me. Please understand that I will be the judge of what is going to be a beneficial challenge for both of us and of what looks more like a job for another artist who actually specialised in the style that you are looking for.
  • DO YOU DO TOUCH-UPS/COVER-UPS?
Yes, to a degree. There are definitely tattoos I cannot reliably cover with my style of tattooing, but I am always happy to take a look and talk through some ideas/options/possible solutions with you :) I do touch-ups of my own work free of charge within the first three months after our session. Afterwards I will charge a small fee to cover the cost of the materials used. Whether ot not I can touch-up someone else's work is again dependant on the tattoo and style itself. It is always worth to try and get back in touch with your original artist. If that isn't possible, for whatever reason, I'll also be happy to take a look and discuss our options - just be prepared that I might need to decline if I don't we're a good match for that specific project.
  • DO YOU TATTOO OVER SCARS?
Yes, but to be able to tattoo scar tissue it must fulfil certain requirements: The scar needs to be at least two years old, and shouldn't be pink and tender anymore. The tissue shouldn't have hardned over time. I am always open for in-depths consultations when it comes to covering scars, since every case is unique and only certain designs/approaches might work for certain types of scar tissue. Please don't hesitate to reach with your questions and ideas :)
  • CAN I GET INKED WHILE PREGNANT OR BREASTFEEDING?
    No.
  • DO ALLERGIES POSE A PROBLEM?
Most common allergies (food, pollen, dust) won't intercept with tattooing and don't add any risks or complications to the process/healing. There's only a handful of allergies that might pose an additional risk if you've got any tattoo plans: ❖ NICKEL While the inks themselves don't contain any heavy metals, there might be traces of nickel left within them due to the manufacturing process. In addition to that metal particles can be abraded from the needle during use. However, all tattooing materials are required by law to adhere to certain safety standards and threshholds and are generally safe to use even for people with nickel allergy. However, when in doubt it is always worth to double check with your docotor. ❖ LATEX I will, at no point, touch your skin with bare hands. I usually use latex-free nitril gloves, but they may not always be available. Don't hesitate to double-check with me if this is a concern to you :) ❖ COCONUT / SHEA / WITCH HAZEL Some inks / skin cleaning products / balms used for tattooing contain coconut oil / witch hazel or marigold extract / shea butter. LAST BUT NOT LEAST Tattooing puts pigments into your dermis (the 2nd out of three layers of your skin). These pigments are foreign objects permanently added to your organism on a microscopic level. While it is extremely rare and unlikely, there is always going to remain a minimal risk that your body will develop a defensive reaction to those foreign objects.
  • I'M WORRIED ABOUT THE PAIN; CAN I USE A NUMBING CREAM TO HELP WITH THAT?
I strongly suggest you don't. Most numbing cremes take a certain amount of time to soak in and take effect. This causes the skin to swell and makes it harder to work in the ink, which can then lead to patchy areas in your healed tattoo. Most of them are designed for very small and short applications and are usually used on infants when they're getting any sort of injections or blood work done. Meaning they most likely won't evenly numb larger areas of skin and thus increase the discrapency between spots you find easy to handle and spots that very suddenly hurt a lot more and unpredictably so. Pain and expectaion management can be crucial during tattooing. An unreliable numbing agent makes this part of the process unnecessarily more complicated.
  • DO YOU DO HANDPOKING?
No. I am not trained in any of the more traditional tools of tattooing, but depending on what you are looking for I might be able to refer you to colleagues who do specialise in them.
  • WHERE CAN I FIND YOU?
You can find an overview of all my residencies and guest spots on 'The Artist' page. But I am currently based in Berlin and primarly tattooing at "Herr Fuchs und Frau Bär".
  • DO YOU DO GUEST SPOTS?
Yes! I love travelling, and I'm always happy to work alongside and collaborate with other artists. I am primarily working in Germany, but always open to work internationally, as well. All upcoming guest spots will be announced on "The Artist" site, as well as the socials! Just keep your eyeballs peeled for updates :)
  • WHY CAN'T I BRING MY PARTNER/FRIENDS/PARENTS?
Unless you are both/all getting tattooed I ask you to come to your appointment alone. A tattoo is a permanent decision. You need to be certain of it and happy with the design and placement. And I'll be happy to make as many changes and adjustments until that's the case and you give your definite go to start tattooing. This can be a time-consuming process. Even more so, the more people add their well-intended opinions to the mix. Another aspect is the available space inside the studio, which I usually share with several colleagues and their clients. On the artist side of things, we need to be able to focus on our work and be attentive to the client's needs. On the client side of things, they need to be able to relax and be comfortable and be afforded a certain amount of privacy. I prefer to be respectful of the people around me and bring as little distractions and crowds into the space as possible. Tattooing is very often a trust-based one-on-one practice, not a group event :)
  • HOW ACCESSIBLE IS YOUR STUDIO?
Please let me know if you have any accessibilty requirements as part of your inquiry, so I can see how to best accommodate them! ❖ Wheelchair accessibility might vary depending on the space I'm currently working at! ❖ There is seating available in all waiting areas. ❖ I usually play music while I work, but I can turn my speakers off at client request. ❖ Most of the spaces I work at are shared, so there is likely to be conversational noise and the drone of tattoo machines. ❖ Please, feel free to bring ear-plugs or noise-cancelling headphones for your own comfort. ❖ I am always available to chat while we're tattooing. I may not be very likely to instigate the conversation while I focus on your tattoo, but I'm present and listening and happy to chat :) ❖ This is never an obligation, though! If you prefer a quiet session and need to focus on yourself, that is a-okay. Just let me know where you're at and I'll only address you to check in on you, let you know if I need you to change your position, inform you about the next steps or breaks, etc. ❖ Most tattoo spaces are rather neutral in terms of scents. Various desinfectants and Dettol are used frequently for cleaning surfaces and preparing the skin before applying the stencils. Some spaces also burn insence.
  • WHAT INKS DO YOU USE?
I only use professionally manufactured inks that are certified under current saftey regulations and laws. The brands I use primarily are I AM INK . World Famous . Kuro Sumi . Just Ink . Xtreme
  • WHAT DOES VEGAN TATTOOING MEAN?
It means that I don't use any inks, skin care or hygiene products that contain animal products and/or have undergone animal testing. I also try to be as environmentally conscious as I can be within a craft that uses a lot of single-use / throw-away items. Most plastic wraps I use for my machine and peripheral equipment are recycled; and I'm using as many biodegradable caps, cups and covers as I can, while still ensuring the quality and safety of all materials involved in creating your tattoo.
  • WHAT KIND OF TATTOO MACHINE DO YOU USE?
A rotary pen. They are more quiet and lighter than the more traditional coil machines, but just as powerful. And easier on my wrists :)
  • HOW LONG IS THE HEALING PROCESS?
Your skin's regenerative cycle is 4 weeks - which is usually the amount of time your tattoo needs to heal, as well.
  • WHAT AFTERCARE PRODUCTS DO YOU RECOMMEND?
Skin Stories Rapid Repair, TattooMed, Coconut Oil.
  • CLING WRAP
Change every 3-6 hours for 1-3 days, depending on the size of your tattoo and the amount of exudate it prduces. With every change, wash your tattoo with clear water and apply a thin layer of aftercare sooth the skin and keep it moist. Once the oozing has stopped, you can completely remove the cling wrap and let your tattoo and skin breathe. Keep applying your aftercare of choice at least twice a day. I suggest once in the morning, once in the evening. Continue to make sure you only ever apply thin layers that your skin can actually absorb. You can apply your aftercare more frequently whenever your tattoo feels dry or the healing skin starts to get a bit itchy. That usually kicks in after a week or during the second week of the healing process. Your tattooed skin will get a bit flakey as it heals. Please don't scratch or pick at those parts. It's your skin shedding the layer that was damaged during the procedure to make room for the renewesd, healed skin underneath. Peelinng those flakes off before they eventually fall off on their own can lead to you tearing out some of the pigment that has not yet settled and may lead to a patchy tattoo.
  • CLEAR DRESSING
The clear dressing I use for the most part is Suprasorb F. It supports moist wound healing, avoiding scab formation and providing effective protection against dirt and bacteria. For tattoo healing I recommend leaving it on for 3-5 days; then carefully remove it under the shower. Important Note: You do not want ink sacks to form underneath the dressing. If there are pockets of exudate forming, please remove the dressing sooner, to clean your skin and allow it to breathe. As soon as the dressing has been removed, start applying your aftercare of choice regularly.
